Yesterday I fell off the (no shopping) wagon in a big way. I did some serious damage to our bank account and I'm OK with that. Well, I was OK with it until this morning when I received our electric bill for November.
$485
Ouch. It's not even winter yet! What is our bill going to look like in January? Not to mention we will also have a ginormous propane bill.
Electric is expensive and not nearly as fun as J.Crew.
But essential and I am thankful we have it when so many do not. Which brings me to a question that I am embarrassed I do not ask myself more often.
What can I do to make a difference?
What do you do?

We installed solar panels, so our electricity is more or less free (there's some small fees associated with this), but the solar was quite expensive, even after the state rebate. They don't make sense unless you're planning on staying in your house for a long time.
If it is any consolation, Husband told me to refill the propane tank (even though I am sure it isn't even half empty) because propane is much cheaper this winter.
We haven't gotten a ginormous bill yet...eeks!
PS, did you hear JLo's Louboutin song? I thought of you when I heard it!
how old is your house? our bill was outrageous last spring - when the pool wasn't on yet nor was the heat/air condition - a friend of my husband recommended having our meter replaced/updated - since then the bills have dropped dramatically. Our house was built in 1993
Do you mean make a difference in the lives of others? Well, during the holidays I always make donations to soup kitchens and food drives. Also, going through your closets and donating clothing, warm bedding etc. is always helpful at this time of year.
If you meant what do I do to make a difference in utility costs, I don't. I suck at being environmentally responsible. (shame)
Move to Florida! :)
Sorry, I know that doesn't help.
We have upgraded the insulation in the walls and in the ceilings (I think it is R-30) and also have tinted impact resistant glass in all of the windows, and our electricity bill is lower here than in our last home which had less square footage.
